I have taken a few photos over the past couple of weekends and have had a strange hexagonal glow/shadow appear on several photos as they do twice in the photo below. The only think I can put it down to is the sun being just above me and slightly in front. Any shots I took with the sun behind me are all OK.

However, I would just like some confirmation that this is the issue and if I can reduce it somehow as the very nature of taking photos will not always be with the sun behind me.

looks like flare - do you use the lens hood when you're taking photos?

Or do you use a UV filter? When there's a strong directional light source using a hood can help reduce flare while using a UV filter can increase the risk of it when the source is ahead of you. If you're using a hood but not a filter then also check that the lens' front element is clean as dirt on the glass can also increase the risk flare.

Ah, that might be it. I have just bought a Hoya Skylight UV lens which a friend advised me to get, should I not use it when in these positions. ?

I'd say not to use it at all unless it's really necessary. I have a couple but now only use one on one of my lenses when near the sea etc. as it's required to fully weather seal it. In other situations the potential loss of quality far outweighs any possible protective benefit (which are virtually non-existent for most lenses).
