Whilst I await the arrival on my new iMac, I thought I better gather some recommendations of the software I need, to replace some of the apps I currently use. Here is a list of the apps I am using, if anyone can recommend replacements for them, it would be appreciated. I have no objection to paying for them if they are worth it.

Coffee Cup Direct FTP
Coffee Cup Lock Box
Coffee Cup HTML Editor
Avast Professional
Synctoy 2.0
Winrar
MP3 Tag
Newsleecher
Roxio Creator Ultimate

I use Transmit FTP - it does the job well, reliably, and the company that makes it is friendly
The same company also makes Coda - a web/html editor (that incorporates an FTP client based on the Transmit code base) - lots of people use and recommend it, although I don't use it myself

For synctoy;
superduper
CCC
Chronosync
synk
arrsync

Chronosync is more powerful than the others imo. It is a great tool. For simple drive cloning / smart updating Superduper / CCC are very simple and do the job well.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. But Chronosync, superduper, ccc are all highly recommended. With CCC being freeware.

Thanks Scooby, its mainly to sync my USB Flash drive with a folder on my PC, or Mac as it will become. That is all I have ever used Sync Toy. I am hoping Time Machine will cover the backup of files to an external drive ?

Yup, but it won't backup from your USB flash drive, as it's not always present.

I can second Transmit FTP - it's v good. I don't use Coda, but do use Textwrangler, which is nice (and free)

I'm using Textwrangler for my OU JavaScript work. It's very good but I can never copy and paste into OpenOffice with it properly - the lines all merge into one (no carriage returns). Very frustrating

I also use textwrangler when editing html or text and don't want to launch dreamweaver. Can recommend. TextEdit is okay too.

Skitch is great for taking screengrabs, and as I do quite a lot of video tutorials now I've got iShowU and Stomp for screen recording and video compression  - both recommended.

But it will backup it up if it's present won't it? I have Time Machine set to back up the system drive and my 2 external drives (1x Firewire, 1x USB) but I don't always swtich on the external drives. All that happens then is that Time Machine only backs up the drives it can see but backs up the externals the next time it sees them. Won't the same happen for a flash drive? Never tried it myself so I don't know.

I'm not sure. I think if you gave each USB drive a unique name, it might do smile

Avast i think is anti virus and i personally don't use any on my mac

Roxio Creator Ultimate - i use Roxio Toast for my CD/DVD burning

For FTP i too use Cyberduck

As for WinRAR i've never looked for a RAR util on the mac, but now i'm curious to what others use as i always unrar things on my pc, but doing it on my mac would be much easier

I already have a professional copy of Avast on my windows machine, not sure if I could transfer it, although as you say, the majority seem not to bother which is great.

Not sure if I will need any copy software as I am not sure on the capability of the iDVD ?

In terms of the Winrar files, it appears that the majority use UnRarX http://www.unrarx.com/

Another Cyberduck FTP user here. I also tried Transmit but to be honest Cyberduck does the job - and it's free. I also use TextWrangler like a few others here. Good little app.
