My TV hasn't been quite right for a while and I'm struggling to figure out the problem.  It's a 37 inch LG LCD telly plugged into a Virgin cable box.  But at any given time there are diagonal kind of lines running through the back of the picture.  They kind of move across at the back.  The picture just isn't sharp at all.  Could it be the SCART cable or the signal?  Or is the TV shagged?

Cheers,
Jamie

I was waiting for the inevitable CRT chat!

Think I'll get my Virgin man round.  The signal on one of the other TV's in the house is perfect, but it is just this one that is broken.  Might just be the box or something.  Will get the man out!

Have you tried the good telly with the same cable (or in the same room) just to confirm

what connects the vermin box to the tv ... im gonna guess its a scart lead ... try unplugging all the rf arial leads that go in and out of the vermin box and the tv see what happens, if you have other scart deviced plugged in make sure these are switched off at least, or at best unplugged, then try again and see if your diagonal line are still there ... sounds like interferance coming through somewhere

Diagonal white lines scrolling across the picture, if memory serves me right, is caused by cross channel interferance particualry in regards to sync.

Probable causes are:

Dodgy feed into your Virgin Box - Get the Virgin man in
Dodgy feed from the Virgin Box to your TV or incorrectly set-up TV- usually easy to solve yourself.

First things first. Your scart, is it actually a good one with or just a POS plastic one? You really should get yourself a fully wired (where all 21 pins are wired) quality SCART lead. By being fully wired it means that it will be properly shielded and carry all the signals that your TV could need to properly sync to the incoming signal.

So assuming your SCART lead is a quality one and fully wired and you still have the problem, how is your TV set-up?

Many TV's will have at least one SCART socket that can be set to RGB or composite. If the Virgin box can output RGB then your TV should be set to RGB too. Now this shouldn't make any difference at all but cheap circutry can cause weird stuff to happen.

Also how many SCART's sockets does your TV have? If you have an odd number like 3 you may well find that two of them are wired together kinda like they are on the same bus, with the third one typically being the one that can handle RGB. If your Virgin Box were to be plugged into a SCART socket that is on the same 'bus' as another SCART socket then it could easily be picking up interference from whatever device is plugged into that other socket ESPECIALLY if that device has an elcheapo POS SCART lead. Again, replace all SCART leads with quality fully wired ones and you may well find the problem goes away.

If the problem persists then ask yourself "do I have two devices plugged into the TV via scart that have a Tuner on them?" I'm betting you do. Your Virgin Box is one, If you have a DVD recorder that is two. If you do then make sure that these two devices are plugged into different sockets on the TV i.e. if at the moment they are in SCARTs 1 & 2 change one of them to SCART 3.

So lets say you've done all of that and the problem is still there. Check the back of the Virgin box. It'll probably have two SCART outputs one for the TV and one for a video recorder. You do have the right one going to the TV don't you as if you have them the wrong way around you may find that you get a loop back which theoretically could cause this problem.

Still having a problem?
