What do most people use these days. I have a copy of Nero which I bought when version 7 came out. I then paid and upgraded to version 8. However, I dont fancy shelling out the £45 upgrade fee to go to Version 9. Are there any credible alternatives ?

My laptop came with a Roxio set up, not sure on how good this is really as I have not used it much.

Mighty fine point, of all the nero versions i have had, the only major difference i can recall between versions was the addition of DVD writing many versions ago.

I think the only reason to go to 9 are the television tools if you have a tuner card. I think 8.5 introduced the HD burning and video editing.

I'd still with Nero 8 unless there's a feature you really need.

I'd stick with Nero, never got on with Roxio. DeepBurner is good but not as good as Nero IMO.

Just as an aside re upgrading. Sometimes the reason for upgrading is not always evident at the start. We have Nero 7 at work which we use for CD Burning but also ripping of CD's to WAV files. This works fine on all machines. However we noticed the other day that at random on two machines although the CD's ripped correctly and would play back, when you put them into a audio editing application and tried to re-record them the systems would simply crash. After much head scratching and foul language we found the problem. The two PC's in question differed from all the other PC's in  that they had new SATA DVD drives whereas all the other systems had PATA CD drives or PATA DVD drives. It turns out that Nero 7 doesnt completely support ripping CD's with SATA DVD drives. Nero 9 does not have such issues.....so far.

One of the things I find annoying with Nero is that every time I have to reinstallit I have trouble activating the "Third Party Activation". I usually end up having to email Nero in the hope that I am not installing on multiple machines, which I can confirm I am not.
