I am creating an historical document or at leaste re-creating an historical document of which I will be using word if possible. Is there any way of making the word document look old by the use of a background or template of some description. I have only ever used word as it is, plain and white ?

Change a background or watermark
Backgrounds are displayed in Web layout view only and aren't designed for printing. Watermarks are intended for printed documents.
Change a document background

You can apply a different color, apply a texture or picture instead of color, or change settings for patterns and gradients.

On the Format menu, point to Background.
Do one of the following:
Click the new color you want.

Click More Colors to see additional color choices.

Click Fill Effects to change or add special effects, such as gradients, textures, or patterns

You could go back to an old fashioned method - soak it in tea for a few minutes.

No milk or sugar required.

Cheers Granty. Managed to get the look I wanted following your instructions. Now having trouble when I convert to PDF, the background image is in squares, but looks fine in a word doc ?
