2 bits of help please:

1) Got a lot of noise on the BT line, but Just seen for 1hrs call out of BT could be as much as £500! Anyone know common causes etc so I can take a look?

2) SKy offer line rental now as well, I get everything else from there - anyone do it, is it worth it?

Unplug everything that's plugged into the phone line, and plug one phone into the master socket. Do you still get noise?

It could be anything - dodgy connection, water in the line etc.

If they find something wrong with the wiring in your house (even if it was BT who installed it originally) they might charge. If it is a fault with the BT wiring they shouldn't charge.

In my experience if the problem mysteriously clears up by the time an engineer comes out and comes back when he goes away they won't charge. But that was a few years ago, it took three or four visits before they agreed there was a fault and found a corroded connection on the wall outside, replacing the line from the pole to the socket.

I believe Sky will pass faults to BT anyway.

Cheers Jason.

When i arrived at the house the wire was active but cut, and not connected, I got someone I work with to sort it out (he does it for the county, so hes not some jack the lad, but again he isnt BT) Obviously this doesnt put me in the best position to blame them, I did the online fault checker and it didnt find any faults.

Further to what Jee said, if you have a 2-part master socket, unscrew the 2 screws and remove the small front panel.

Then you'll find a jack behind and you should plug your phone into that to test. This is the point where wiring becomes a customers responsibility and if you still have noise here, try a different phone if you have one and if you get the same then call BT safe in the knowledge the fault shouldn't be in your wiring. If you don't have noise, repost.

Phoned BT, and they said no fault on the line, have a word with Sky BB before they come out.

I did, and could hear massive amounts of noise when they were doing tests etc, they passed it onto their customer solutions dept (!!) who sent me  text yetserday to say they had resolved the issue. Seems a bit better, still some noise and the odd drop out though

Not sure what to do next.

But have you isolated the customer side wiring as this is the first thing they will do...

Yes, the wire that comes into the house we connected and terminated into a socket (it looks like the previous owners had cable phones etc) when we plug a phone straight into that we still get the noise, on two phones.

You'll need to do what Whatever wrote - Surprised BT haven't sent you a PDF giving you instructions 'cos that's what the bleeders on my ass.

I never did remove the frontplate 'cos I hardly use the phoneline and I knew it was there side. Sure enough, a few months later and the noise is gone.

Freakin' mad they expect you to inspect their work before they'll listen to you - Look, you're gettin' me going here now big grin

This sounds like what we experienced last year - http://www.dotdragnet.com/forum/index.php?topic=1095.msg8330#msg8330  Lots of line noise to the point voice calling was impossible - and lots of internet drop-outs. BT ran tests and repeatedly insisted it was a problem within our property and warned us we would be charged if they sent an engineer out. We checked everything and could find no fault inside (hubby former BT Engineer, so he knew what he was looking for). BT Engineer came and found out it was a fault in the street, therefore it was their problem Roll Eyes

Thanks Sam - it sounds very similar actually. Im goin to call BT tonight and get an engineer out I think. As Im renting (even if it is off my dad) he will pay for it, but obviousy as its my dad Im a bit more reluctant to get a charge to him. After all, it is my inheritance wink
