How do you get IE7 through WSUS?

What is WSUS in easy terms, Im thinking from what Ive read its a central server that downlaods the WUs and deploys them - if thats the case how do you point machines to it? Im reading some MS stuff, maybe havent got to that part.

Why is IE7 only available through WSUS? Is there no other way to install it accross a AD network, MSI with an MST or something?

WSUS is effectively an internal, corporate version of Windows Update. Uses all the same components settings and client as normal Windows Update, except that instead of going to the main Microsoft server you can set all the PCs in your company to just use your own server.

The benefits of doing this start with bandwidth (just one server picking up updates through your internet gateway, rather than 3,000 or so) and go all the way to controlling which updates go out to make sure they're compatible with your business apps, etc. Once you've got a WSUS server installed and configured, its just a case of using its console and pulling machines in your domain into appropriate groups to push out the right combination of updates.

I'm pretty sure IE7 can be deployed pretty much any way you want, the only MS supported ways are WSUS and SMS, but just because its not supported doesn't mean it won't work. And SMS generally just uses MSIs for deployment anyway, so pick your favourite non-MS deployment platform and try it out.

WSUS was easy to set up on the server ... but the clients wont bloody communicate ... IIS logs dont show any tries to update. Pain in the bum but looks the mutts nuts. A very good system

Do they know to update from your server rather than microsoft?  Have you set this up in Group Policy?

Got it all working. Installed it onto one of the new servers we are using to stream media - as it needs about 30gb and this sevrer has 1.5tb

Easy install if you are running server 2003 SP2 - even managed to run the management console on my XP desktop so dont have to VNC, or *gasp* walk to the server cab to use it.

So far just rolled out 180 updates to the two admin machines, one being IE7, one has picked up, mine hasnt but did yesterday with my first ever test package, will see what happens tomorrow AM.

 Have set up a new GPO called WSUS Settings and applying that to groups in the AD, then sorting into groups in WSUS - you can get the GPO to do that automatically as long as you set up the empty groups first in WSUS then put the name in the GPO, however - I cant be arsed to create a new GPO for each OU in AD - so just gonna do it manually.

You need to set the details in the GPO as I stated above and linked to the how to guide, somehwre in there is a step by step description of the GPO Settings.

yeah ... i had imported a reg script onto each of my servers that was _supposed_ to set the wsus details ... didnt work though except on one! went the gpo route (local policy because im too lazy to set up a DC) and it worked

all seems well now, very good
