Google - Local Business Results

When you put for eg 'Butchers Bolton' into google, it comes up with a list of about 10 local businesses which appear to be part of google maps.

How does a site get listed on that .. does it happen automatically as part of the search engines trawl or is there a specific place the site has to be submitted to ?

Do a search for google local business listing and you should find the page where you apply.
