We have returned from a rather splendid trip ooop north to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Edinburgh and (obviously the highlight of any trip) Yawner's Towers. We've had some shitty weather, and I completely neglected to take any shots in the snow (gah!), but I did get some OKish shots of Scotland's most excellent capital city.

From the castle walls:

We didn't bother paying to get in but there's a nice view from the entrance! Also, it was definitely a "black and white day" weather-wise.

I'm assuming these are the barracks. I took this one from the top of the tourist bus - during a very brief flirtation with sunshine.

I love square images and this shot suited it I think.

I (foolishly) used my wide-angle almost exclusively for these shots. I really should vary it more. I've also only adjusted these in iPhoto, although I've found I can get some nice black and white conversions by changing the temperature and tint sliders as well as the levels and contrast.

I love Edinburgh, even if it is awash with tourists and cat-stranglers. Plenty of charm

Fantastic shots!

I love Edinburgh too. Both my brothers are based there so I've spent quite a bit of time there in the last couple of years. I can't believe how expensive the castle is. My brother paid for us to get in a couple years ago and I think it's totally overpriced.

I've got quite a few Edinburgh photos on picasa (not anywhere near as good as yours though) and not very many of the castle either: http://picasaweb.google.com/kipamum

First one makes me think of historical newspaper photos - over black and ragged and industrial in feel - dour and drab - but I like it. Second one, I like the idea of the composition, but the net result here is a little too tonally bland for my taste I think. I would have liked to have seen more contrast and definition on the rocks; it feels like they have a lot of story to tell that perhaps we're not being given access to IYSWIM. I think the third shot works really well, more as an abstract shot than a documentary piece of footage, it breaks many rules of composition, but works in its own way. I would have liked to have seen the top right hand corner burnt in even more.

Overall, splendid work Mr Rutt. smile
