don't assume they've checked for obvious blockages. We've had a similar situation before where the shop who were installing it (and charged for the benefit to us of them doing so) failed to saw off the end of the pipe - which was a sealed end until the fitter removed it on-site. IE they didn't have any bleedin' clue and just connected pipes without checking them.
Always worth checking. I had another occasion with a new washing machine where there were bolts for keeping the drum safe during transport - again these should have been removed by the fitters and weren't.
I'm waiting to hear back from my brother. It sounds to me like something hasn't been installed correctly if it's not worked the first time they've used it.
