I think the old, cranky, alcoholic, bloke (no, not Nige) that lives next door, has recently taken in a youngish lodger (or perhaps they are teh ghey). We are regularly being exposed to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, blasting through our paper thin walls. Last night it went on 'til 10:30pm. We have had constant problems with these neighbours, resulting in numerous police visits, solicitors letters and harassment warnings (them and us). They are not approachable. I've had enough.
I contacted the police and it would seem they can't help, but I will need to contact environmental health. I will do this tomorrow.

Tomorrow moring I will blast their ass out of bed with some loud music. That'll learn them. What shall I play?

Some sort of annoying verdi opera by some warbling lady who thinks she can sing - that, or yawner singing in the shower should be similar (so Mr Teh Rutt tells me!)

How about Rick Astley. Leave it on repeat and go out.

Record everything in a diary.

Get the local councillor on the case.

Your kids shouldn't have to put up with this and make sure you tell the council.

Is it a private rent?

when I was a kid the neighbour downstairs played his 7" of Sinead O'Conner's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (quite ahead of her time, the txt spking ex-nun) on a constant loop for about three weeks... not to annoy us or anything, just cos he liked it I think... but annoy us it did, so I'd recommend doing that... cross your fingers one of their household has just been dumped as well

Rosco,
now beginning to suspect his neighbour had been dumped, poor morbid swine

Cheers for the practical advice Chris! Yes it is a private rent. I've made a note of all the 'discos' so far.

These are the neighbours who called the police because we had bamboo, that started to grow under their fence. They also wrote a solictors letter because 'the kids skateboards/bikes might damage their driveway' or 'the children were causing an obstruction whilst playing with toy road cones on the drive outside our house'. It's a shared driveway between 3 houses, they have no reason to go past our house - we have no choice but to go past theirs.
Within 3 weeks of us moving in they knocked on our door and said "we got the last lot evicted and we'll do the same to you".
The bloke assualted Martin and also threatened us whilst my kids and their friends were present.

His wife died of cancer just before Christmas (she was a worse bully than him). He has now hit the bottle seemingly 24/7 (he drank a lot before she died). He's been caught drink driving twice in the past 6 months.

no crybaby Total undesirable, unapproachable, obnoxious neighbours. There's little hope of us moving imminently either (even now Josh 10 and Lois 8, have to share a bedroom).  dontgetit

That's a bugger of a situation to be in Kim  Sad

Still, make sure you keep a diary of all events and contact between you and the neighbours.

Write down any communication you've had with him over the noise issue.

Write down all occurences of friction between your and him.

Contact the local environmental health team at the council. They have a duty to investigate all complaints like this.

The environmental health team should be able to get it sorted, especially if there's children involved.

Phoned environmental health - only to be greeted by a voicemail system. Left a message. No response yet.

Neighbours playing loud music again, thus I decided to treat the children to loud kids TV (fed through the AUX input on the stereo).

Funnily enough he seems to have turned it down a bit.

or wait until he's really drunk and give him time to pass out... then try to get into his house, slip a noose around his neck, and hoist him up over the bedroom door

him hanging dead from his door, stinking of booze, with a recently dead wife, will be an open and shut case... the police wont even give a second thought to the smashed pane of glass on the back door wink

Looks like someones going to get an ASBO. But could be you, trying out do them possibly isn't the best idea as the council would just say your just as much to blame.

I've have extensive experience of this ~10yrs in fact!

Chris has covered the main bits - The bum bit is disciplining yourself to note times, dates and events... even for the smallest of happenings.

If you're in a council house, I believe you have greater powers than private (the ultimate being eviction).

Private house and you're largely on your own - I had to take the bitch to court to get an injunction on her. It was a civil action therefore at my expense. However, to get real powers attached to it, I had to take her back each time she broke the terms. Each time the powers are increased... if successful. Each time more cash and time.

Finally you eventually get one with a "Powers of arrest". I only went as far as an initial injunction (toothless really) so instead took the view that I'd have more impact on her by reporting every criminal act of damage and rag her through the courts.

Trouble with that was, despite hammering the cops everytime she stepped foot on the property, they would just go round there and maybe - at best - lock her up for the night.

It got to one particular night around 2am when she knackered me car wing mirror. Cops came round. Said they'd go round. I let rip BIG style. Demanded they arrest her and drive it to court lest I kick-off about stuff like negligence.

Out came the notepad and thus began the first in a series of several court appearances.

To them it's: 'Hey, it's only a wing mirror - Looks daft taking a petty civil argument to court' (each time new cops - un-acquainted with her history - would turn-up, see). To me it was: 'Look, you're doing this to protect me, from myself, 'cos if you don't do nowt, I'm gonna end up doing sommat really stupid... and nor you, or the courts, will extend the same latitude to me, that you do to her, because I'm a guy.

I really empathise with you Kim. You really have few options: Move (quicker and less painful all-round); and/or move to evict them (if applicable) or wait till he dies (which is what happened in my case), 'cos he don't sound like he's gonna move anytime soon.

Mike has a good point in moving being the easiest way out.

Why not go back to the council and tell them the kids sleep, health and schooling is suffering with the late night noise?

Easier said than done. But Kim, its that or put up with months of misery while you're jotting everything down on a notepad. Life's too short.

It will be financially impossible for me to move into another private rent, besides 3 bed houses just don't come up round here (that's the reason we ended up in a 2 bed in the first place - it was this or remain homeless in a B&B). I've applied for a council house but there is a 9 month wait, just to get onto the waiting list. I really have no choice but to sit and wait.

DNT the HUSTLA Army.

If you go home tonight and find a large muscular black man  that wants to have a word with you outside your house, you only have yourself to blame.

We HUSTLAS are EVERYWHERE.

In Northern Ireland a large muscular black man would stand out somewhat. I can't remember the last black guy I saw here. It would have been round Belfast.

I think the old, cranky, alcoholic, bloke (no, not Nige) that lives next door,

Karma...

... On Monday evening, I was lying in bed with my window open, when I heard a gate slam followed by a loud "splash" outside. Then I heard some groaning noises. I looked out of my window to see the lodger from next door, pulling the old bloke from next door out of his pond! He'd come in his back gate, very drunk and fell/walked straight into his pond!
