AJAX image loading

I'm doing a small gallery-type page script in ASP but instead of linking the thumbnails to another page or popup I'd like to load the larger pictures into an area adjacent to the thumbnail gallery... I know I could easily do it with a bit of Javascript but I fancy doing it with AJAX, with a wee loading graphic while the image is served

whats the best framework snippet I should use to do this (JQuery/Scriptaculousetc)?  I don't really need any other fancy gubbins on this site so the smaller the snippet the better

Most of the ones I've seen have been using Moo Tools.

cheers Jeep, I already have slimbox which uses mootools... I don't really have time to study the documentation of the entire framework so I may just use that again rather thqan my idea of having one image area change
