I think (Mac'ers may have to confirm/deny this) that modern iPods can be shoved into a file storage mode.

Sorry, I've read the post three times and gave up each time. Did you do GCSE English.

sorry my typing is terrible especially on the new keyboard ive been given recently, the keys feel really heavy.
any way what i was trying to say was ive found out that you can only get the ipod touch into file stoage mode, if you buy some software to do it. ive been looking into buying a mini SD card for my phone so i can use that as it has an mp3 playr on it aswell. do you think there is any benefit in using my phone like this or woulod i be better to have a seperate storage/mp3 solution?

I've just been away and used my Nokia N95 to store around 4GB of data on so I'd have access to it for work while out and about and Mrs. S also used it as her music source while away and had a couple of GBs of MP3s on it for that - all worked a treat.

For data storage it works fine and I now use the phone as one of my back-up systems for key files.

For MP3s, personally I normally go for a separate player purely on the basis that, with separate devices, when playing MP3s has killed the battery your phone will still work.

I have a cheap mp3 player (logik) I think, which is basically a USB drive, with an mp3 player & screen built in. It can cope with files.

I've also got an nokia E61, which has a separate memory card, perfect for tom tom, files, mp3s and more.

I use my phone (N73) to play music and store files if needed. I've played music almost solidly on it for a 7 hour round trip on the train plus basic usage during the day too. Battery has lasted all day easily. You could also look at the cost of just getting a spare battery for your existing phone which would be cheaper than a new player.
