need a reference for ucas - any ideas?

I'm applying to go back to Uni as a mature student (I'm 32 btw), and need to provide a reference. Ucas is, unsurprisingly, geared towards 18yr olds and so asks for an academic reference from your school or college - my old teachers are probably all dead by now anyway, and those who aren't I haven't set eyes on for 14yrs. Alternatively (for mature students) they will accept a professional reference from a recent employer. Er, well as I've been self-employed for the last 9yrs I don't have a recent employer either. So what the hell am I supposed to offer them? Any ideas of ways round this? I'm pulling my bloody hair out here trying to come up with someone! HELP!!

Would any of your previous clients provide a reference?

To be honest we go more on what we see at an interview than references. I and I believe the company use references as a safety net only.

Whenever I need a reference I ask my oldest clients who've known me for 7+ years. Theoretically they have been your employer, they've just paid you as and when and not paid NI on you! Alternatively call UCAS and ask them what they suggest or if getting references from a long term client would be okay.

I'd suggest calling UCAS as well - I know I'd struggle for an academic reference.

Thanks for the ideas chaps (and chapesses). Will give ucas a call. Might also give the uni a call directly to see what they say.
