I've been thinking of exactly the same - I approached Giles Insurance, if you speak to their Birmingham Branch who deal with PII. They basically said, deal with a broker, you'll get a better deal/reply rather than approaching them directly as some ignore sole-traders.

Let me know how you get on.. should really do this myself!

I went through an Insurance Broker for mine - seemed easier than trawling around myself. Try one local to you - worst case is they send you some quotes and you choose to go elsewhere anyway, shouldn't cost you anything.

Still researching this one - I have had a range of quotes dallaskirkalnd look quite good and will go ahead but not cover web hosting services - which is fine.

Hiscox - waiting to hear back from them as if you say you do any web hosting they won't insure - via the on site quote system. I will see what they say when I talk to them.

Local broker- Ok if hosting less than 10% of business but premiums twice as much as the rest.

simplybusiness.co.uk - looks pretty good on price and quite flexible (can temporarily add a subcontractor if needed )

I presume that having the sites hosted elsewhere (ala SiteHQ/Clook) but you administer the account wouldn't could as you (web) hosting client? Or would it?

Just spoke to Hiscox and they are fine if you are a reseller that organises hosting - only a problem if you run your own server.

I need to decide between the simplybusiness quote (136/year for 250,00 prof indemnity + 1000000 public liability which I don't think I need) and Hiscox -£173/ year for 250,000 prof indemnity

Hi,

Went with Hiscox in the end. Talked to them, evaluated their questions and concluded that they were much more aware of what I did as a web designer. Happy enough and just hoping I never need to fall back on it  smile

I use hiscox for my home insurance, as they were the only one that would insure my equipment as I work from home, without an upper limit! They seemed exceptional on the phone when I spoke to them!

When would public liability insurance potentially be needed? [/clueless]

http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?type=RESOURCES&itemId=1074301656
That should help

If you write a lot of code for large companies with big turnovers I'd also consider professional indemnity. It protects you against claims resulting from bugs in your code and similar.

edit - Doh just saw the topic and realised that's what it was originally about. Anyway I'll keep both links in

I was about to post a new topic until i realised i was spelling indemnity wrong in the search ...

Sorry to hijack an old thread, but would you recommend hiscox? i've never taken this sort of insurance before so i'd rather go on a recommendation.
How much liability did you go for? (i realise this is dependant on the nature of your business but would give me an indication)

Hiscox here too. We have everything we needed through them, about £500,000 cover I think (could be wrong, can't remember now). Already proved invaluable when we needed legal advice about a now ex client threatening us (well his vigilante developer.. but that's in another thread!).

Pay by month, interest free direct debit so it's not a major outgoing in one go.

Hiscox for me too i was passed onto them via my bank (HSBC) who recommended them. I also pay monthly which makes it easier.
