I'd swop my MIL for a photo printer as well.

In fact I'll give you a photo printer if you took her away.

Are these photo printers really any good? I mean, if I want to get a print I'll do it via Photobox. Is any affordable home printer really a match in terms of picture quality and longevity?

Nope! IIRC, the cheapest you can get at home is around 15p/photo. You can do it for a third of that at Photobox

Fair enough.

I think quality wise, it's near on par. The industrial printers use a different setup iirc when it comes to inks, but you'll hardly notice the difference. Some more expensive printers now come with a guarantee on the inks, saying it'll stay colourfast for x years. You'd also need the right paper.

My opinion on this is that it's good for throw aways. I wouldn't even consider using any of these in a frame that I wanted to last a good while, or in a photo album. Maybe I'm wrong however!

My photo printer cost me £40 (Epson RX425, usual retail was around £80-100). I've printed day and night photos on it and they come out looking as good as photos from photobox or photos from boots etc. Lasting quality? Don't know, ask me in a few years! I've printed 6x4" photos, right up to the edge, and also A4 photos. Cost wise? Couldn't really comment as I've not sat and done a batch of photos and determined how much ink has been used, however it's nice to have the option of getting an instant photo rather than having to go into a shop in town or order online and wait. I have single ink cartridges as well, which was my reason for buying the Epson.

There are clear advantages and disadvantaged to both methods. I've used my own photo printer (HP of course) for many years but now use Photo box.

Their service is so good I don't bother with my photo printer any more.
