Closing a Site

I wish to close my site for 24 hours but wondered if there was an easier way than just deleting files and then uploading them again afterwards. I appreciate I can change the index page to explain reasons why its closed for 24 hours but how do I stop people coming in on different urls. I really need to just block the whole site, like others do when updating details or overnight maintenance.
Any ideas ?

Cheers. I was able to use one of the scripts to do the job I wanted to.
