Looking to purchase a new ipod and also trying to get my head around the generations!  The 'Ipod Video' is more expensive so I presume the latest?

Looking at the classic 80gb from play.com.  Can you better the price or put me off? smile

I've got one - sound quality is good, though apparently not as "warm" (meh) as older versions, according to a lot of reviews floating around.

Seems fine to me. The only problem I have with this is it can sound stupidly low outside (to the point that its drowned out by external noises) due to the fact that it has to comply with sound level regulations because of the French and so its a lot lower volume wise than a US model. bah.

I though the ipod touch was the latest? Or does that not count?

If he's looking at an 80GB, I'm betting 4GB would be useless.

I'd make my normal recommendation, but as brilliant as it is, the X5 isn't big enough by today's standards.

Yeah, they're flash based, so they do a 4GB and an 8GB.  Which is a bit small, but ooh look, isn't it pretty? wink

I have to say, I thought 8GB wouldn't be enough. I had an ipod nano before my iPhone, and 8gb == 5 1/2 days of music. Constantly. Now whilst it might be great to carry around your entire music collection with you, I don't think I've ever felt the need. I remember the not too distant past where I used to take a walkman and 2 C90s with a collection of songs on if going away for the weekend, or hiking up scottish mountains for a few days. That gave me ample music enjoyment. So I really don't see 8gb as being a terrible amount of storage - it's actually pretty f**king amazing when you think about it. Oh, and it does look pretty - you're right. It'll look nice next to my macbook air I reckon big grin

Thanks all, having a look at ebay to.. looks like I could get the 160gb for roughly the same price, hmm.

Is the correct answer, it doesn't count in my eyes. smile  Currently got a nano but need more storage.

The missus (Vee) has an IPod Touch 16 gig - form and function. Beautiful. Incoporates a very usable web browser too.

thing is, that 80gb is extremely useful to use as a last resort remote backup - you may be burgled, your house may burst into flames or be used as the site for a cross-dimensional invasion of soul eating demons but at least you'll have all your crap backed up on your ipod.

One clarification - the touch, and 'classic' are both the 'latest' versions, along with the squarer nano - they all came out together. I have a 80GB and its excellent - just wish I'd got the newer larger drive (160db?) size though as mine's full and I'm forever having to delete music from it to fit new music on.

On the touch vs classic thing. It depends if you want to watch a lot of video or view photos on it. I never do and only ever use it for music & podcasts so a large screen's not that important.

Oh, I do apologise.  That's far bigger! wink Tongue

As Mr teh Ghost said above, I like to have plenty of space.  I'm one of those people that will carry his entire CD collection, as I choose what to listen to according to mood or whim, and I don't like "but it's at home" scenarios.  I also back up 5GB worth of my PC to the X5, as it's the most convenient off-site storage I'll ever get.  My house burns down/gets burgled while I'm out?  The most important stuff isn't lost.

Damn straight. I have a ton of family photos and they're all digital - sure, the external HD thing is useful but ultimately, its still sitting in the house somewhere and a possible disaster waiting to happen (I knew a guy whose house was burgled and the gits took his external HD, too). If you're out and about and have your ipod with you all the time anyway - and as I work from home, I do - then knowing all the important stuff is also fastened to my belt is strangely reassuring. I don't bother with vids or movie clips for the ipod, but the storage for the pics was one of the other reasons I pumped for the 80gb. I knew about the issue some people have with the lower volume, but meh - couldn't find another player around that offered the same storage space for the price.

I got the missus the 80GB classic for xmas and she absolutely loves it... I've always been anti-gheyPod and my current player is a 30GB Creative Zen Vision:M, its bulkier/heavier but has a good screen and supports more formats (mp3/wma/mpeg/wmv/avi/divx/xvid)... but I must admit her ipod is good for the money, £145 for 80GB (my 30GB was £170 a year ago) and I do really like the interface and click-wheel... I may turn gay in future

I was like you once, had a zen and everything, but the storage amounts on the ipod were huge in comparrision, and got my video for 120 squid on ebay, brand new, cant argue with that really, even if Iturd is the crappiest piece of software I have ever used.

But do you really really need all those formats? Go ghey, you know you want to.
