I've inherited a linux server which is pumping out 'Disk space warnings on /var less than 1000MB'. Looking on the server /var/log maillog is hugh (4gig). Am I safe to truncate this?

THe log files should be rotated. Don't let /var/log run out of space. Some variants of linux won't like it, and will b0rk.

I've sent you a PM.

Arrrgh

I thought I'd leave it over the weekend to see if the script ran. It didn't. Maillog was full at 4gig this morning and I then received about 30,000 email warnings of undeliverable mails. I've since truncated maillog and will setup the rotation.

Am I right in thinking that clients sending emails to our server will get a 'Insufficient Storage' message? Does it then depend on their settings as to whether or not it continues to try to deliver?

It depends on the mail software in use, how it's setup etc.

Why don't you send a message from your home account and find out?

I've cleared the maillog now and it seems ok. I thought it was do to with their setup so at least we've given them some accurate info. Thanks guys
