Trying to help out a friend.

His laptop developed problems which resulted in having to totally re-install windows. However at the same time he decided to upgrade to a larger hard drive. His laptop is now fully working but he wants to retrieve some data from his old drive.

I have a card reader than has a built in 2.5" hard drive so I took out my hard drive and slapped his in and connected it to his laptop via USB. His computer detects the drive BUT it only assigns a drive letter to the first partition. If I go into Disk Managment I can see the two other partitions, both of which show as healthy, and try to add a drive letter to them I just get the following error message:

"The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer."

Needless to say restarting the computer does sod all.

Any ideas as to what to try?

Basically the drive can be trashed (eventually) but he just wants to get some data off of it but he's not sure exactly what in terms of where it all is and file/folder names etc.
