Rotating squares in photoshop

Just a quickie .... If I put a rectangle shape layer on another then ctrl T and rotate it, the edges are a little jagged. Is there a way to avoid this ?

You're talking about anti-aliasing. i.e. the remedy to "stairs" or the jaggies you describe. This is typically acheived by having additional stairs that are lower in transparency adjacent to the problem edge - zoom in on an angled curve to see what I mean. EDIT: or see the file I attached below by clicking on it.
Go to Edit > Preferences > General. You'll see an option with a drop down list called "Image Interpolation" with a variety of choices. I'm guessing from your post that you are set on "Nearest Neighbour" just now. I'd encourage you to both try every setting (bi-linear, bi-linear best for enlargements, bi-linear best for gradients etc etc) but also change these settings on a regular basis according to what you're doing at the time. There's a short cut to the preferences dialogue box: Ctrl + K.
