Any ideas?

Just built two PC's, exactly the same spec and both suffer the same problem that being when you go to shut down the computer from Windows it reboots instead.

Each PC is running XP SP2 patched up to the eyeballs
Each PC only has two hardware PCI cards in them which are proprietary sound cards
Everything else, graphics, network, USB, Firewire, sound etc etc is all on the motherboard.

In terms of software the only thing we've done is install Windows SP2 and all patches, install the software for the proprietary sound cards and some motherboard monitoring software.

Being that we used the proprietary sound cards and software in other XP machines without any problems we don't think it's the cards causing the problem but can't rule that out. However as the motherboard, CPU, RAM etc are the exact same models that the company that makes the sound cards currently ship in their Turnkey systems I wouldn't have thought that they would be the problem.

Just can't think what it could be!

Just built two PC's..

You've just build them incorrectly wink

Isn't there a cable that goes from the reset/off switch to the motherboard somewhere? There's probably different pins for restart and shutdown - you may just have those the wrong way round or something.

I'm sure that Tanty knows (and could have done it cheaper) </obvious>

Rutty - i'd imagine thats only if you press the buttons but mr teh lamb is choosing shutdown fom inside windows?

I've had this problem before on a pc when i had the bios to boot after the mains power is turned on, it would shut itself down then immediately start up again.

You're probably right, but Windows will just send a signal to the motherboard to reboot, right? If the cables are installed incorrectly then the signal could be arriving on the wrong pin </guessing>
