How easy is it to create the shape and outline to pictures similar to the one below. I wish to chamfer some similar images in the same way to creat a specific look.

Is it a case of several techniques in photoshop etc or is there a tool that does it in on easy step.

Any advice or pointers to a tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

I generally use Fireworks rather than Photoshop, but my technique would probably be the same... reduce the colours then trace around the image using a bezier tool to make a vector shape that can be enlarged

In photoshop:

1) Load the image. Make a square selection of the area you require using the rectangular marquee tool
2) Create a mask using this selection
3) CTRL + Click on the mask to load the selection up again from the mask
4) Go to Select > Modify > smooth. Enter a smooth value appropriate to your image - this will vary
5) you now have a selection with rounded corners. Go to Select > Inverse (or SHIFT + CTRL + I) to select the opposite of what you have
6) On the mask, Use the paintbrush with black paint to paint over the corners you want rounded. The selection will only allow you to paint the areas that are "correct"
7) De-select, and add a stroke using Layers > Effects, a new layer as a background etc etc. to suit.

You could always try

There's also a take on sIFR that does rounded corners really well but I can't remember the link. Perhaps someone else can?
