So Windows Update is bitching (again) because some service or other that it's trying to get at can't access the net.  Went into my firewall profile and let Generic Host processes through, because I remember it needing that. Still bitching.  One by one, I went through them until everything except media player and task manager can get out - even "Genuine Advantage" has net access now, and WU is still bitching at me that there's something up.  I'm not about to drop my firewall - what gives?  What new service have they decided is absolutely crucial to updating your PC?

Is your firewall really so retarded it cannot tell you what it is blocking?

Yawn

Thanks for that.  You've been a great help.

That's the thing - all I see in the firewall logs is the usual chatter on port 1900.

I actually tried switching the software firewall off altogether and WU still gave me the same error.

Fecking MS.  The last 487325 versions of WU worked fine.  All I want to do is see if they've got a driver for this wee webcam I've inherited.
