When we got our dog, the vet told us to avoid dog worming tablets from supermarkets. We thought they were just protecting their market, but got ours from them anyway.

My sister has four dogs and lives in the country, so they often catch rabbits, rats, etc and she worms them regularly. She usually gets stuff from the vet, but owes them lots of money at the moment (one of her dogs got hit by a motorbike, so she had to get a big op) so she bought some stuff from a supermarket and all of them have been sick for a few days- lethargic, off their food, intermittent diarrhea, etc.

Does anyone else know anything about this?

Some dogs do get a reaction from individual brands of worming tablets. Probably more common with the cheaper brands?

I'd suggest trying a different wormer once they've perked up.

I tend to buy Drontal from the online pet med sites. You can also get prescription ones if you can get a prescription off the vet and send it on to the store owners. Might save some cash.

Think you're right. Good idea on the online meds. I'll pass that on to my sis as she gets through a lot stuff.

Cheers. smile

I gave our three worming tablets from Tescos last weekend - about £6 for 3 tabs (Bob Martins so its a reputable enough brand). One dog fine, one dog a bit under the weather for a couple of days, and the other had constant shits, throwing up everywhere and really lethargic for about 3 days and only fully recovered by this weekend again. Back to Drontal from the vets again in the future.
